Hi Tony

While I have not used this particular product, I really think that Health Canada needs some education. I think when they first started this recent 'campaign' on nutritional supplements they were thinking of 1 ingredient products (ie Vitamins C pills) and became overwhelmed - very overwhelmed. And they have made some decisions that do not make sense: putting the supplements in the same catagory as drugs for pity
sakes!

My sources tell me that they are re-thinking things - one of them being putting supplements in a category of their own, not a drug or a food. We'll see.

It is good to have knowledgable people like you trying to sort out legitimate concerns from the 'smoke and mirrors' reactions.

I completely agree with you. I have been using kava in the States for over 6 years regularly and am in great health. I couldn't imaging going back and taking anti-anxiety or sleeping pills ever again.

What is most interesting surrounding the kava controversy is the lack of perspective. Like you said, many medications have an innumerable amount of side effects. Even over the counter, Tylenol can have a number of deaths attributed to it over the course of a year.

How can consumers accurately decide what kind of care is best for them, when governments and mass media jump into hysteria over the potential of health issues for an extremely small segment of consumers. Why don't these organizations make grandiose warnings about all the other everyday things that large segments of consumers buy that may also have potentially dangerous and lethal side effect (ie, alcohol, xanax, tylenol, etc.).

I posted the following on another blog. Any suggestions for me to lose weight or should I even bother anymore?

Ron

Good Morning!

I quit smoking on July 31st, 1981, at 11:25 pm. At the time I weighed about 185 lbs., slightly over weight.

Since then I have gained 2,750 lbs. and lost 2,685 lbs. I blame it all on smoking. I smoked 2 1/2 large pacs of plain cigarettes when I quit after 25 or so years of smoking.

I feel that I was so addicted to the habit, not the nicotine, that, to this day, I have to have something in my mouth!

Over the years, I have tried: the Grapefruit diet, smelling salts, Hoodia, hypnosis, low carbo, Aitkins, exercise (gained 10 lbs. one time), Nutrisystem, Weight Watchers, lower portions and exercise, others that I have read about and can't remember.

The most I lost at one time was 60 lbs., which was low carb and walking (about 2 hours a day, 3 or 4 times per week. I did it in about 5 months.

Of course, I gained it all back.

I can stay on a diet, lately, for 3 or 4 weeks doing pretty good (i.e.) losing 10 to 15 lbs, but, then .......!!

The compulsive snack eating takes over again, small at first, radishes, then crackers, then, bagels, then, bagels and peanut butter, then, ....... well, it just keeps growing like a fungus, until I'm 10 lbs. heavier than I was when I started.

I am 68 years old, my hips are sore when I walk, or, stand for too long, or, if I sit too long.

I weigh 250 lbs. This is, 90 lbs. more than I was when I got married 44 years ago.

Although I can't speak from experience, the best strategy is to limit your portions, and, eat as advised on the Canada Food Guide, exercise on a regular basis!

And, DON"T START SMOKING!

It ain't easy, man! ... it ain't easy!

FYI!

My understanding of soy is that unless it is fermented, in order to kill the toxins, then organic or not, soy is not safe for human consumption. The soy industry has done an amazing job of presenting their product as the alternate choice to dairy. problem is that it seems to be worse for our health.

I understand that anything that is mass-produced is going to be unhealthy for the most part. What about organic soy products?
Mass-produced products are usually radiated, genetically altered, filled with the pesticides used in the growing process and then packaged with highly toxic materials. Organic products, I hope, are as close to natural as possible - free of all the "stuff" and "process" man uses to dole out cheap, cheap, and cheaper products to make their money. ANYTHING man-made is made for profit and therefore usually very unhealthy for human consumption.

Thank you for your professional guidance. I once was on medications for fibromyalgia and found someone who told me to drink more pure water, eat more healthy fats, ingest more fiber, move more but also relax more and take Juice Plus+ (fruits and veggies in capsules). I took that advice and 3 1/2 months later I began coming off all medications. That was over 4 years ago and today I am healthier than ever. I have definitely learned the importance of great nutrition.

Thanks~ Pam (website for Juice Plus+ is Turn2wellness.com

The real question as to what the reason for Bill C-51 is "Who benefits?". No one else but the pharmaceutical & medical industry conglomerates could possibly benefit. Oh yeah, and the government from the taxation of those grossly expensive drugs that will be prescribed in place of affordable natural vitamins and supplements.

And Canada, a country whose reputation for apathy & letting the government monetarily abuse its citizens, actually stood up and demanded this ridiculous bill be shot down, putting natural health products clearly in perspective of importance to Canadians. Good for Canada.

Natural healing & medicine are finally getting the recognition it deserves and the pharma industry must be feeling the pinch, especially when statistics like prescribed drugs killing more people every year than all illegal drugs combined exist.

Government needs to keep its greedy nose out of the natural health industry and quit selling out its people out to big business & killing them - that's fraud, that's treason and that sucks!!

Orthomolecular psychiatry and medicine over Toximolecular pharmacia is unquestionably preferable to me,this statement I make from personal experience, research and observations during the past three years.I am convinced there are countless more such as I out there and feel this threat(Bill-C51) and our concerted response to it will be immensely instrumental in bringing to the forefront and advancing the cause of natural medicines and exposing the duplicity of our Health Minister and others. It was just announced the bill is being sent to committee until the fall.We have no time to waste.
